Hiring the right PI
It’s a sad fact that in many countries, private investigators are a dime a dozen. Here in Thailand, in particular, the lack of a regulating body to monitor private investigations has resulted in many fly by night operations that prey on the needs and vulnerabilities of potential clients who only desire to find out the truth.
.
Not all jobs are for the police and official authorities. There are a lot of personal matters that require a level of discreetness not present in official investigations – public records and all that. Besides, no policeman or any law in any country for that matter, regards investigations on infidelity, for example, as a job for law enforcement authorities. This is where the private investigator comes in. And while the results of some investigations are grounds for legal proceedings, not all aspects of what PIs investigate are considered for legal actions.
.
What binds the private investigator and a client is not the professional service fee, or unlike in dealing with police – the law – but a simple and yet very important quality called trust. Many times a client comes in with very personal information that a private investigator needs to keep in the strictest confidence. So it is imperative then, that clients choose the right PI to trust and share their sensitive information with.
.
One way to choose a private investigator is through good referrals. These are people or friends – or even legal counsel – that might recommend a good private investigator with a good reputation for good, solid results, and also one who knows how to be discreet. Recommendations tell you how a particular PI works with his / her clients, and helps you determine if the service will work for you as well.
.
Another way is to have a long, sit down meeting with your PI. Try to get a good measure of him on how he answers questions and what kinds of terms he uses. A good PI will always be straight with you and cut on jargon and other kinds of terms that might serve to confuse or mislead you – you don’t even need to divulge the complete details of your problem then. Ask questions like what techniques does he / she uses and how long they have been in the business. You general level of comfort will be enough to determine if you can trust this person – there is no reason for you to force yourself to enlist the services of a firm or person you are not comfortable with.
.
It is paramount in choosing your private investigator that you are comfortable with him or her. Many fake and fraudulent firms will be more focused on the price and fee rather with the service they offer. They abuse your trust and bleed you for your money. Good PI outfits will discuss with you completely the scope of service and other details involved should you decide to enlist their services – this is a sign of honesty and trustworthiness that will translate into good results.
