Beware of Suspicious PI Outfits

Beware of Suspicious PI Outfits

I’ve spoken time and again on this blog about how there seems to be a prevalence of private investigation agencies that offer their services to the general public. Normally this kind of boom is a good thing for customers and prospective clients, as they have a lot of choices spread out before them and PI agencies are driven to become more competitive and deliver the best results possible, which in turn gives better output for the industry as a whole.

.

The sad thing is though, that there are a lot of agencies who post their services online, but are not transparent with the kind of information they give to potential clients. Most simply have a generic email or a mobile phone number you use to contact them – which, as I would like to remind you, are both easy to produce on the fly and are thus completely disposable and expendable. Rarely have I seen agencies with fixed addresses or offices.

.

This kind of practice is very suspicious, simply because there is no reason for a private investigation agency to hide who they are. I mean, it’s a lot better if you are as accessible as possible not only to your clients but also to people who want to contact you. The very reason why clients contact us is to dig into issues or find people – that sort of thing – we do not want them to practice investigative skills for them to find us. When you think about it, it’s really ridiculous.

.

This form of operation begs the question of why these agencies are so afraid to post a means through which clients can reach them easily, even after the case has been ‘resolved’. As I’ve said before, mobile phone numbers and email addresses, even websites themselves, are easily replaced. Are they afraid of follow-ups from clients? I understand that not all results of any PI agency are perfect or fit with what the client expects, but these should be discussed and explained to the client at the very beginning of the working and professional relationship between the two parties. But a private investigator or private investigation agency should always be forthcoming with his / her contact information, especially when it comes to the client.

.

Remember that legitimate PI agencies that are confident in the quality of their work have absolutely no reason to hide themselves from clients, and are not afraid at all to display all the relevant contact information so that not just new, but former clients can readily reach them. It is outfits, on the other hand, who have outstanding tasks that have yet to be completed, or are guilty of botching up an investigation are wary of being tracked or traced by dissatisfied customers and clients.

.

Mobile numbers and emails can easily be replaced should the need arise. Office addresses and business names, on the other hand, are harder to throw away. So look for the physical business locations and visit them from time to time. And more importantly, look for agencies that are established and stable, such as Thailand Investigation, who have already built a good and honorable reputation for themselves.

That’s a really good point you raised right there. I just want to say that what you said was spot on. In my rounds online looking for a PI agency – and who doesn’t have an internet presence anyway? – I’ve come across a lot of the kind of outfit you’ve described. They simply have a website and an email address, and nothing more than that. These are things, as again you said, easily discarded and replaced with something new, with the old crappy service and the bad people still behind it. Your kind of outfits are the ones that are, to me, trustworthy.

I agree with harrowind, you just hit it spot on. The internet to me, has become this vast sea of information and data that it’s easy for common joes like me to just be lost in all of it. What’s important for organizations and groups such as yourself is that they present people with not just some internet PI outfit, but something tangible. PI work is a personal professional relationship between the client and the investigator. Trust and other things ride on this, so it would be foolish to trust an email address or mobile phone number.

harrowind: Thank you for your kind words. It really is a big blight to us (not just my outfit) that there are private investigators who prey on poor clients who want nothing more than to get at the truth. It’s bad enough that prospective clients have to contend with the risk of unskilled investigators without them having to be subjected to all of this.

piersdickensdale: I agree that the internet can be really overwhelming at times. Especially for people who are already stressed with the burden and the suspicion they have – which are the driving forces that induce them to seek out the services of a PI. Thanks for leaving your thoughts!

    Hi,

Interesting post. I have to say Im the only one who seems to disagree as I have hired one of these firms. I honestly thought it was normal for them to want to remain hidden due to possible revenge from women or people who had been rumbled by this company and had their lives affected negatively because of an invesigation done by them.

Anyway. the company I used only had email/mobile phone and skype details to contact. That said they did a thorough job and always answered my questions thoroughly and charged a reasonable rate so I was very happy. They also saved me a fortune as I was going to invest in a business that (afte their investigation proved it) was not what it was cracked up to be.

I can see your point but I think that by simply emailing/calling one of these companies you will get the impression whether they know their stuff or not and also whether or not they seem genuine.

    Regards Sam
